From Mist-takes to First-Takes: The Role of Reframing Errors
Peter Drucker famously quipped, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast every time”. What can that perspective teach us about our work to grow reflective, innovative problem-solvers? This session will highlight the importance of encouraging mistake-making and reflection (for students and teachers!) in developing a culture of joyful growth and innovation. We will present strategies to move students and teachers from a posture of hiding, mis-takes‚ to one of reflectively embracing first-takes.

Increasing Access by Opening Up Lessons
Have you ever tried a CPM lesson by the book and found it a little choppy with a certain class? You want the students to discover in their teams, but this class needs more guidance than others in the past. The remedy: Opening up the lesson. Inspired by Jo Boaler and NCTM’s Principles to Actions and Taking Action, we will facilitate an open task and you will be the student. Then we will roll reverse, guiding you to become an open task expert so you can increase access and engagement.

Making G.A.I.N.s CPM Global Perspectives
Our current generation of students is said to be the most connected, yet disconnected youth in history. Making G.A.I.N.s stands for “Global Awareness by Investigating Numbers,” and was started during my journey as a US State Department Global Educator last year. It is imperative to build a global mindset into the classroom and encourage awareness with respect to current world issues and how math helps us identify them, understand them, and create potential solutions to them.  I will share lessons our team has created and give you resources to start thinking about creating your own global connection.

Strategies to Improve Reading; So We Can Get to the Math!
Reading abilities are a common obstacle among teachers in the math classroom, especially with a student-centered, problem-based curriculum. We find that students who are reading below grade level often get lost in the context of a problem, resulting in barriers using problem-solving skills. In this session, I will present reading strategies for the math classroom with the goal to help students be successful thinkers and problem solvers.
